Lampshade Making Workshop

In this 4-hour workshop, Una from 3 Chooks Lampshades will guide you through the process of making a lampshade from scratch, using your own individual fabric. You will make and take home a 20cm diameter x 23cm high drum lamp shade. (Extra lampshade making materials will be available for purchase on the day.)

During this exciting class - you will be taken through the process step by step with hands-on support from your teacher and you will learn the traditional technique and skills to create a professionally finished lampshade - no prior experience required.

Spend a creative morning with us learning how to prepare your fabric and take measurement of your lampshade frame correctly. Explore the technique of applying your fabric to the lampshade backing and practice how to attach that panel to the rings in a way that achieves a professional, long-lasting result. Then finish off your lampshade with a clean and tidy seam.

We supply all materials and tools on the day (except for fabric). All you need to do is show up with your piece of fabric and enjoy a morning filled with creativity and laughter, cups of tea and the pleasure of learning a new skill.

What you need to bring:

For an individual result bring along your choice of fabric, about 70cm wide x 30cm high as a minimum. For larger prints, you may want to bring along a larger piece of fabric to select the best part of the pattern to fit your shade.

Quilting-weight cotton works best for learners, not too thin and not too thick. We prefer working with natural fibres for a soft texture. For the workshop, stay away from fabrics that fray easily or are too heavy and stiff. It is recommended to use a light to mid weight cotton so you can enjoy learning the lampshade making process.

This is an adult open age class but is suitable for age 12 plus and no previous experience is necessary however children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER - Una Davis

Fabric, paper, wood and yarn are all going through my hands as I create and I love the process as much as each unique piece. With a tailor and a bookbinder in the family, I had access to fabrics and papers, sewing machines and gluing techniques at a young age and so my creativity was ignited early. I would sew my own clothes, crochet bikinis and market bags and create unique greeting cards for family and friends.

Once my beautiful daughter came along, I would create wooden hearts and stars for her room, sew her sweet little dresses and crochet doll house furnishings. I would go on to selling my craft at markets and online and I now enjoy letting my creativity bring joy to others.

The love for individuality in my craft has led me to lampshade making - a wonderful traditional craft which enables to give a unique touch to a room by creating a statement piece or by matching the lampshade to soft furnishings and creating a pleasing aesthetic. I now get to run skill sharing workshops to teach the technique of lampshade making, I provide lampshade making supplies to crafters all over the country and when time allows get to make beautiful lampshades for my clients.
